THE ROLE OF THE SCHOLARLY ENVIRONMENT OF MAWARANNAHR IN THE FORMATION OF SPIRITUAL VALUES
Abstract
Following the decline of the Sasanian Empire, many scholars of the Academy of Gundishapur, along with its valuable library, were transferred to the “Bayt al-Hikma” (“House of Wisdom”) in Baghdad, established in the eighth century.[1] Prominent thinkers, including Abdullah ibn al-Muqaffaʿ and distinguished scholars from the Barmakid dynasty, which is regarded as one of the most enlightened dynasties of viziers in Islamic history, played an important role in this great process. The scholarly legacy, experience, and traditions of Gundishapur subsequently exerted a strong influence on the newly established centres of learning in Western Iran and in Marv, Khorezm, and Baghdad of Movarounnahr
