Abstract

Self-justification and narrator reliability in the Uzbek translation of Yellowface. This article examines how an unreliable narrator’s self-justification is rendered in the Uzbek translation of Rebecca Kuang’s novel. It analyses twelve purposively selected micro-pairs from the English original and the translation produced by the article’s author. The comparison distinguishes evaluative additions, emotional specification, modal shifts, and functional preservation. Certain choices intensify the narrator’s defensive stance, while retained uncertainty, admissions, and contradictions leave room for critical interpretation. Stronger self-justification is therefore not equated with greater narrator reliability. The analysis distinguishes the content of a justification, the force of its evaluation, and the textual grounds for questioning it. Its findings concern the selected passages; actual reader responses were not tested.
