THE ROLE OF INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES IN DEVELOPING STUDENTS’ INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE THROUGH INDEPENDENT LEARNING

Abstract

In the modern globalized educational environment, the development of students’ intercultural communicative competence has become one of the essential goals of foreign language education. Language learning today is not limited to grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. It also requires the ability to understand cultural differences, respect diverse values, interpret social behavior, and communicate appropriately with people from different cultural backgrounds. This thesis discusses the role of international experiences in developing students’ intercultural communicative competence through independent learning. International practices show that intercultural competence can be effectively developed when students are encouraged to explore cultures independently, compare cultural norms, analyze real-life communicative situations, and reflect on their own cultural identity. UNESCO emphasizes that global citizenship education helps learners understand global issues, respect diversity, and participate responsibly in society (UNESCO, 2026). Similarly, OECD defines global competence as the capacity to examine local, global, and intercultural issues, understand different worldviews, interact effectively with people from other cultures, and act for collective well-being (OECD, 2018). These ideas demonstrate that intercultural competence is now viewed as an important part of students’ academic and personal development. Independent learning activities, such as project work, online research, reflective journals, video-based tasks, virtual communication, and cultural case analysis, allow students to become active participants in the learning process. The study concludes that international experience plays a methodological and practical role in improving independent learning tasks in Uzbekistan’s higher education context. By adapting global practices to local needs, teachers can help students become culturally aware, tolerant, critical, and communicatively competent individuals
