PRESERVING CULTURAL MEANING IN THE TRANSLATION OF ENGLISH PROVERBS: EVIDENCE FROM UZBEK AND RUSSIAN

Abstract

The article examines the problem of preserving cultural meaning in the translation of English proverbs into Uzbek and Russian. Special attention is paid to the linguistic and cultural features of proverbs, translation equivalence, national-cultural specificity, and translation strategies used to convey figurative meanings. The study highlights that proverbs reflect the history, traditions, values, and worldview of a particular nation, making their translation a complex intercultural process. The findings indicate that successful translation of proverbs requires not only linguistic competence but also deep cultural knowledge to preserve both semantic and pragmatic meanings.
