THE ROLE OF VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT IN MASTERING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the most essential components in mastering English as a second language, as it directly influences learners’ ability to communicate effectively across reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This article examines the significance of vocabulary knowledge in ESL learning, highlighting the relationship between active and passive vocabulary and the stages of acquisition. Common challenges faced by learners, including limited exposure to authentic contexts, memorization difficulties, and interference from the native language, are also discussed. Furthermore, the paper explores effective strategies such as contextual learning, technology-based tools, interactive activities, and the study of word families and collocations. The roles of both teachers and learners are emphasized as key factors in ensuring successful vocabulary mastery. The findings suggest that vocabulary development not only enhances linguistic competence but also builds confidence and fluency in second language communication
