Abstract

Communication is not only the exchange of words. People do not always understand each other through grammar and vocabulary alone. In real life, successful communication depends on context, speaker’s intention, tone of voice, relationship between speakers, and cultural background. This is why pragmatics plays an important role in communication.

Pragmatics is a branch of linguistics that studies how language is used in real situations. It helps people understand not only the literal meaning of words, but also the hidden meaning behind them. For example, when someone says, “It is cold here,” the person may not only describe the temperature. The real meaning may be, “Please close the window” or “Turn on the heater.” This shows that the meaning of an utterance depends on the situation.
