Abstract. This article examines the functional and pragmatic characteristics of language use across diverse discourse types including academic, professional, literary, and everyday conversational contexts. Language functions differently depending on its communicative context, purpose, and audience, with distinct discourse communities developing specialized linguistic resources and strategies to accomplish their particular communicative goals. Through comparative analysis of discourse types, this study identifies systematic variations in functional emphasis, pragmatic strategies, structural organization, and strategic deployment of linguistic resources across different discourses. The findings demonstrate that understanding functional and pragmatic characteristics of specific discourse types constitutes essential knowledge for effective communication within specialized discourse communities and for translation and language pedagogy.
