Abstract

The article compares Russian and Uzbek set expressions on the basis of three phraseological dictionaries, the Uzbek dictionary by Sh. Rahmatullayev and co-authors (3,938 units) and two Russian dictionaries of different types, the academic dictionary edited by A.I. Fedorov (6,884 units) and the general dictionary by Yu.A. Larionova (2,855 units). The units were lemmatised and classified by their thematic components, and the differences were tested with the χ² test. Somatic components occur in 24.3% of Uzbek units against 17.3% and 20.9% in the Russian dictionaries, and components denoting the inner world of a person occur in 5.5% against 2.4% and 2.5%. Animal and colour components show no significant differences. The somatic profiles of the two languages are similar (ρ = 0.70 and 0.71), but Uzbek prefers the eye, the mouth, the face and the liver, while Russian more often uses the shoulder and the throat. Uzbek locates feelings in koʻngil, jon and bagʻir, where Russian uses душа and сердце. Twelve verified pairs illustrate four types of correspondence, from full equivalents such as совать нос and burnini suqmoq to units without a somatic counterpart such as koʻzi toʻq.
