Abstract. Assessment plays an important role in the foreign language learning process because it helps teachers understand students’ progress and identify areas that need improvement. Two of the most widely used types of assessment in education are formative and summative assessment. Formative assessment focuses on feedback during the learning process, while summative assessment evaluates students’ final results after a certain period of study. Both types of assessment influence students’ motivation and academic achievement. This thesis discusses the role of formative and summative assessment in foreign language education and presents the perspectives of several scholars who have studied assessment in education. Their ideas help explain why the balanced use of both types of assessment is important for effective language learning.
