THE IMPORTANCE OF VOCABULARY IN LEARNING FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to examine the importance of vocabulary in foreign language learning and to illustrates its significant role in the process of language acquisition. Vocabulary is considered one of the fundamental components of language learning because it enables learners to express their thoughts, understand information, and communicate effectively in different situations. Without enough vocabulary knowledge, it can be difficult for learners to develop their overall language competence.
This article shows how vocabulary knowledge contributes to the improvement of the four important language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It also discusses the relationship between vocabulary acquisition and successful foreign language learning. Furthermore, the article examines the main challenges that learners may encounter while expanding their vocabulary, such as forgetting new words, lack of practice, and challenges in using words appropriately in different contexts.
In addition, this article presents several effective strategies for improving vocabulary learning, including learning words in context, regular practice, extensive reading, and the use of modern technological tools. The article emphasizes that developing a strong vocabulary foundation can greatly enhance learners’ confidence and improve their ability to use a foreign language effectively.
