Abstract

Abstract: Word formation is one of the most important areas of linguistics because it explains how new words are created and how the vocabulary of a language develops. English and Uzbek belong to different language families and have different grammatical structures; however, both languages use several productive word-formation processes to enrich their vocabularies. This article presents a comparative analysis of word formation in English and Uzbek, focusing on affixation, compounding, conversion, abbreviation, reduplication, and borrowing. Particular attention is paid to the similarities and differences between the two languages in the formation of nouns, adjectives, verbs, and other lexical units. The analysis demonstrates that affixation and compounding are productive in both languages, while conversion is particularly characteristic of English. Uzbek, on the other hand, demonstrates a highly productive use of suffixation, which is closely related to its agglutinative structure. The study also considers the influence of other languages on the vocabulary of English and Uzbek. A comparative investigation of word formation contributes to a better understanding of the structural characteristics of both languages and can be useful in language teaching, translation, and comparative linguistics.
